The Sousaphone was thought up by a named
name John Philip Sousa and created by C.G. Conn in the 1890s. Made
to sound different then a helicon in the US Marines Band. So C.G.
Conn made the Sousaphone with a wider bore and a bigger bell for a
fuller sound. Also he wanted it to sound over the others, so he
made it pointed more up.
The Sousaphone became a popular
instrument in a marching bands, but was made to be more of concert
instrument, with 22" or 24" bell to a 26" bell now a
days.
